Escalated moral protest is the heart of Sunrise NYC.

Protest & Demonstrations
We plan mass rallies, marches, and office takeover campaigns to mount political pressure. We create moments of stark moral clarity. We turn out to hearings for legislation our Hub has endorsed, we call in to support legislation, we write individual letters of support. We get out the vote.

Art & Banner Drops
We translate moral protest into art for the public through graphic design, meme-making, drawing, painting protest signs, theater, and more.

Partnerships & Coalition Building
We show up in solidarity to actions, events, and campaigns planned by fellow environmental justice and labor groups. We partner with other organizations and groups who we respect, to build networks of progressive solidarity, to grow our political power, and to learn from others’ areas of expertise.
Recent Actions
Climate Can’t Wait
On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, Sunrise NYC joined 37 other climate organizations, including New York Communities for Change, Food & Water Watch, 350 New York and many more, outside Governor Kathy Hochul’s midtown office. Climate Can’t Wait is calling on the governor to back the #climatecantwait legislative package. It’s been over two years since New York has passed significant legislation to address the climate crisis. Since that time, the climate emergency has shown no signs of slowing down, as Hurricane Ida caused the death of 42 New Yorkers last fall.
Democrats in New York now have control across three branches of government. There are no excuses for not passing climate legislation in 2022. Governor Kath Hochul must fulfill the promises of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and pass urgently needed climate legislation, including the clean futures act, the climate and community investment act, the green new deal for New York Act and more.
Highway Shutdown
On Monday, October 25, 2021, Sunrise NYC, along with Extinction Rebellion NYC and Friday’s for Future NYC, shut down the West Side highway and FDR Drive for almost an hour to demand immediate climate action. We called on Biden and the Democrats to pass the key climate provisions in the Build Back Better Act. Over 33 people were arrested during the highway shutdowns.
As President Biden and world leaders would soon head to COP26, there was an opportunity for the US to be a leader on climate and not pass half-baked measures. Biden and the Democrats must deliver on their promises to the American people by creating good-paying jobs for all, protecting clean air and water, addressing environmental injustice, and ensuring a liveable future for all.
Biden, lead on climate or we drown!
