OUR TEAMS
The Sunrise NYC Hub has an organizational model that relies on the participation of our members to succeed. Whether it’s five minutes a week or more than 40 hours, you’re equally a member and we depend on you. We also practice mentorship by shepherding members into leadership roles and providing them with skills and tools to become effective organizers.
When everybody actively plugs in and gives what they can, our movement thrives and we are able to grow our numbers, power, and influence.
Campaigns
POLITICAL ENDORSEMENTS
Manages the endorsement process for the hub, coordinates with candidate’s campaigns, and organizes post-endorsement support ranging from canvassing, door knocking, phone banking, special event planning, and fundraising. Gets out the vote. Contact us at [email protected].

Our team organizes direct actions and protests in favor of the Green New Deal and other issues important to Sunrise NYC.
GREEN NEW DEAL FOR PUBLIC HOUSING
We organize support for the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act, the first official GND bill. We partner with Movement School and NYCHA tenants for this initiative.
CUBE | CLIMATE URGENCY IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
A team of engineers, architects, and urbanists bridging industry and activism. Through multidisciplinary work, we envision and share ideas for changes in the built environment. Contact us at [email protected] and visit us at cubenyc.org.
SUNRISE KIDS NYC

MOVEMENT FOR A GREEN NEW DEAL
A coalition of partner organizations pushing NYC electeds to support GND-style legislation, and holding larger actions with our combined forces. Includes DSA, New York Communities for Change, Food and Water Action, and Resource Generation.
Communications
OUTREACH
Recruits new hub members through canvassing, speaking in schools, tabling at events, and more. Coordinates partnerships with schools and other local institutions. Generates hype for big upcoming actions through flyering, speaking at events, and disseminating information to hub members.
SOCIAL MEDIA + GRAPHICS
Makes climate action go viral! We design and implement social media campaigns for the hub, and generate graphics and media content for all of our social media channels – Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. WRITING
A group of passionate and dedicated writers working on journalism (writing and pitching for publications or our Medium account), science fiction, poetry, playwriting, and more. We’re taking submissions from writers envisioning a Green New Deal! Email [email protected] to get your work featured on our Medium.
ART
Using collaboration, visual tactics, performative strategy, and graphic arts, we create the imagery of our movement and activate meaningful artistic action that shifts the public’s perspective. We recognize that art unites us and we pool our skills together to create flyers, protest signs, banners, memes, dances, puppets, t-shirts, and more.
PODCAST
Our team produces the podcast WAKE UP, NEW YORK! A Sunrise NYC Podcast, a new narrative podcast focused on the New York City climate conversation. Each pair of episodes dives into reporting and interviews on current initiatives in NYC. Learn more about our podcast and its team.
DIGITAL TOOLS
We improve and maintain the hub’s digital infrastructure. This team is more important than ever in the online organizing model of the COVID era, and is ideal for our more data- and tech-oriented volunteers! We also maintain our newsletter.
Community
HUB COUNCIL
Plans monthly hub meetings, manages online tools such as the hub’s Google Drive, and arranges social events such as hikes (and more recently Zoom hangout sessions). The team is responsible for internal communications, ensuring everyone is on the same page about goings-on within Sunrise NYC.
ONBOARDING + TRAININGS
Hosts Sunrise Movement orientation trainings. Designs and facilitates skill-building and/or knowledge-building trainings for hub members to expand their ability to lead and be effective activists. Identifies gaps in hub knowledge and capacity and addresses them with relevant trainings.
JUST HUB
Prioritizes embodying justice, equity, and anti-oppression in our movement work and relationships with each other. Challenging ourselves and our work to be strongly rooted in climate justice, the interconnectedness of all oppression, and community solidarity. Creates its own initiatives and supports other teams.
MONEY FOR THE PEOPLE
Forecasts and identifies fundraising goals. Plans and holds fundraising events for Sunrise NYC. Manages, tracks, and categorizes our funds (Venmo, Banking, Patreon, etc.). Creates and manages our hub’s budget. Oversees a system for approving/overseeing expense requests. Processes incoming funds and keeps our finances organized!
COMMUNITY CARE
Creating a sustainable, regenerative culture of psychological well-being for hardworking Sunrisers through climate anxiety workshops, buddy systems, and more!
